The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has embarked on two separate trials of Ocean Software’s Pharmaceutical Integrated Logistics (PILS) version 3. The ADF already uses a previous version of the cloud-ready solution, which lets the ADF gain tighter control over the ordering and supply of medical, dental and pharmaceutical supplies across the entire organisation, helping to save costs and ensure the right products are supplied to those who need them.
As part of the trials, the Royal Australian Navy has deployed PILS V3 on the HMAS Canberra, where it captures all medication and related data for those taking part in the combined Australian and United States training activity, Exercise Talisman Sabre 2017.
PILS V3 is also being applied in the current ADF Deployable Health Trial, and has been deployed on 15 defence laptops in field hospitals and deployable units to fill the gap in personnel health records that occur when soldiers and sailors are sent into the field.
Bruce Moors, General Manager, Ocean Software, said, “The ADF delivers healthcare services to 80,000 personnel across multiple locations and with various healthcare needs. Providing the pharmaceutical products they need, as well as maintaining complete, accurate, and up-to-date medical records is complex, and is made even more difficult by the fact that military personnel can access civilian healthcare channels as well.”
“The ADF will use PILS V3 to manage the ordering of pharmaceutical and medical supplies from Defence-preferred suppliers. The ADF will use the solution’s centralised catalogues and electronic ordering platform to centralise management, governance, and stock management. This will control procurement activities and ensure they’re within policy.”
Kathy Thomas, Pharmacist for RAAF Townsville said, “PILS is an intuitive, flexible system that allows me to manage my Pharmaceutical medications and consumables right down to the tablet or dressing.” “The IT support is fast and efficient and customer needs are always a priority, while integration with FRED Dispense makes PILS a versatile tool to use in my every day practice as a Pharmacist.”
The benefits of PILS V3 include:
• centralised procurement and electronic ordering, which lets the ADF consolidate its purchasing requirements and reduce costs
• improved patient care because pharmacists can access patient information and complete medication history across multiple locations
• streamlined product consolidation through a single, standards-based database of products with consistent descriptors
• improved efficiency at the pharmacy level, such as on-the-fly stocktakes that don’t require the pharmacy to shut down its operations
• less stock lost through gaps in the supply chain and product expiration.
Ocean Software will present the new features and user interface of PILS V3 to the military pharmacists at the Military Pharmacists Special Interest Users Group Conference, 31 July to 1 August, at HMAS Penguin.
